Maintaining the Surroundings of Your Retaining Wall

Care for the drainage, ground and landscaping around a retaining wall as well as the visible wall. Maintenance does not change the design capacity of the retaining system.

Keep Accessible Drainage Outlets Clear

Check that accessible outlets are not covered by soil, mulch, planting or paving. Observe runoff after rain. If the drainage arrangement is unclear or water is collecting behind the wall, arrange appropriate assessment rather than altering the system without advice.

Read the retaining wall drainage guide.

Watch for Erosion and Settlement

Look for washouts, exposed foundations, ground settlement and changes in surface runoff. Avoid adding or removing retained soil without checking the wall design. Filling a low spot or excavating beside a wall can affect loads and support.

Plan Planting and Watering

Choose plants for the site, root behaviour and space available. Keep drainage points accessible. Avoid directing irrigation or runoff into areas where it can accumulate behind the wall.

Keep Loads and Access Within the Intended Use

Check before storing heavy materials, parking vehicles or adding structures near the wall. Attached fencing and its connections should remain consistent with the design. Retain access for drainage observation and maintenance.

Observe Changes After Heavy Rain

Note new leaning, cracking, movement, erosion or drainage problems. Arrange assessment by an appropriately qualified professional when these appear. Do not assume a cosmetic repair resolves a structural issue.
