Timber Sleeper Retaining Walls

Timber sleeper retaining walls are a perfect choice for creating a natural, rustic look in both urban and rural settings. Ideal for garden terraces, landscape borders, and erosion control, these walls blend seamlessly with natural surroundings and are a popular choice for parks, private gardens, and natural-themed commercial landscapes.

What is a Timber Retaining Walls?

Timber sleeper retaining walls are constructed using wooden beams or sleepers, arranged horizontally or vertically to retain soil. These walls are favoured for their natural appearance and ability to create a warm, inviting ambiance. The choice of timber and its treatment is key to ensuring the longevity and durability of the wall.

Benefits of Timber Retaining Walls

  • The aesthetic appeal of timber walls is one of their biggest advantages, offering a traditional and natural feel. They are also relatively easy to install and can be more cost-effective than other types of retaining walls. When treated properly, timber walls can resist decay and pests, making them a durable choice for many landscapes.

What is a Cantilevered Post wall?

In simple terms, a cantilever post type of retaining wall is like a structural fence that holds back earth. The design principle is a cantilever post, the post is normally a steel column as specified by an engineer for permitted walls and is encased in concrete or driven into the ground. The type of soil will ultimately determine the diameter and depth of hole required for the posts. A general rule of thumb is the post goes into the ground 1.2 times the distance that the wall is above the ground.

For example, consider a wall height from the ground up of 1m, the hole should be drilled to a depth of 1.2m. When concreted into the ground the post should have 100mm clearance from the bottom of the steel to the base of the hole meaning the amount of steel in the ground will be 1.1m, the amount out of the ground will be 1m, therefore the total steel length required is 2.1m.

What is the lifespan of the steel posts?

The steel post sections are generally hot dipped galvanised to prevent corrosion. The lifespan of hot dipped galvanised post is typically between 40-60 years.

When designing the walls we have found that some people like to have their steel poles a different colour to compliment the surrounding areas. In this instance we recommend that the posts are painted using a resin-based paint system. This approach will ensure suitable protection of the steel from corrosion which will result in not only an aesthetically pleasing look but a longer lifespan.

What are Timber Sleepers?

Timber sleeper panels are structural panels that fill the space between the steel posts. These panels need to be structurally sound as they must take the load and resist bending due to the ground loadings coming from the rear of the wall. The timber sleepers are treated to CAA, H4 level making them suitable for retaining wall application.

The benefits of timber sleepers are their natural rustic look and if they have been treated to the correct standard, they are resistant to the elements and breakdown from pests such as termites. When comparing to the concrete sleepers they are a cheaper alternative but do not last as long.

Do I need the retaining wall Designed and Engineered?

For any wall running along the boundary or over 1m Victorian Builders Authority law dictates that the retaining wall must be permitted and engineered. We engage structural engineers and surveyors to ensure that all our work is compliant.

The following illustrates the sizing and specifications of a typical wall design. 200mm x 75mm timber sleepers can be a direct replacement for the 200mm x 75mm concrete sleepers.
